The Conquest: What is The Ride to Conquer Cancer?

The Ride to Conquer Cancer is a unique, two-day cycling journey that will take place from Louisville to Lexington and back on September 26-27, 2009. Our goal is to ensure that we help individuals and families in our region conquer cancer. The funds you raise through The Ride to Conquer Cancer will generate the funds necessary to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the programs, services and advanced care they need at Norton Cancer Institute.

Will I be able to ride that far?

Definitely! The Ride is for everyone from the average weekend warrior to accomplished cyclists. This event is for all kinds of people: mothers, fathers, grandparents, friends, and cancer survivors. It will be a challenge, but that’s exactly what makes it so meaningful. Our team of Ride Guides is available to help work out a training plan that fits in with your life and will get you in shape for The Ride. We know that you can do it. Just think of yourself on a mission to bring the latest cancer care to those who need it most. While on the route, you can go at a fast or moderate pace, whatever suits your endurance level. If for any reason you can’t continue, there will be sweep vehicles along the route to take you to Camp.

How do I Train?

Most likely you’re not used to riding all day, then waking up the next morning and doing it again. So we’ll help you get ready to do just that! We’ll organize Training Rides in different areas and terrains which vary in difficulty from beginner to experienced Rider. We’ll also have Orientation sessions where you’ll learn more about bike basics in case you’ve never changed a bike tire or want to know the difference between a road, recumbent, hybrid, and mountain bike. Another important aspect of training for The Ride is learning how to properly fuel your body through proper nutrition and hydration. So once you sign up for The Ride, you’ll receive a Ride Manual to learn about eating and drinking right, track your training progress and learn important stretches to keep your body limber. And last but not least, you can always call your Ride Guides at  when you have questions about how to physically prepare for The Ride.  They’ll be able to provide you with one-on-one advice and guidance to ensure achievement of your goals.

How do I raise money?

The need for new cancer treatments and prevention methods is great.  That’s why each participant must raise at least $2,500 in order to ride. You may have never raised that much money before, but don’t worry. We’ve helped thousands of people raise more than $100 million for cancer causes, and we’ll be here to help you every step of the way. Of course you can call our expert Ride Guides at any time with questions at .

Once you sign up for The Ride, you’ll receive a Ride Manual where you’ll learn how to ask for donations and how to keep track of your fundraising progress.  You’ll also have your own webpage right here on this website where you can post your photo and tell your story. Then email the link to the page to your donors so they can donate straight to you online!  Once you are a Rider, we’ll give you all the tools you need and we’ll be there for you the whole way. That’s our promise.

Whether this is your first time fundraising or you’re an old pro, we’ll help you reach and exceed your goals because we’re out to beat cancer together.

webimage_handlebars3_blkAm I on my own when I'm on the road?

Not at all! We’re with you every step of the way. It begins on  when you’ll check-in, meet your fellow participants, and kick off the event with a smile. Along the route, Pit Stops will provide you with water, sports drinks, snacks, plenty of portable toilets, and lunch. At Camp on Saturday night, you’ll have hot meals, hot showers, and you'll spend the night in a cozy tent. You can eat a hot, nutritious dinner and then enjoy the evening's entertainment or spend some time getting to know other Riders. We also transport your gear for you when you’re out riding, so you don’t have to worry about carrying a backpack while you ride. The journey ends on , where you’ll be greeted and congratulated by your family and friends.
